Crossing into North Carolina

Crossing into North Carolina

routeIMG_20150625_142916 IMG_20150625_142948The next stop is crossing the Carolina state line. I left James river and headed to my next camp site, Lake Kerr, North Carolina. I woke up early to get some early miles. By 8:30 I was already on the road. The ride of the scooter felt good but as I previously mentioned I can’t push the scooter pass the 40mph. This terribly annoyed me. I anted to go to a mechanic again to have it checked but this time I wanted to go to a bigger town that’s close to a city. The whole drive was only 110 miles and before you know it I have already crossed the state line.

It was not even 12 and I am about an hour away from the park. Surprisingly with the choked engine I was able to get great miles in a day. I looked into my gps from my phone and scanned it. The whole time I was in Virginia I had no service what so ever. The only way for me to get service is to go to a McDonald’s and get a quick wifi to check my gps and some online messages. I stopped in at McDonald’s and then took out my laptop. For some odd reason I do all my logistics at my laptop then transfer the information on my phone. I do this because when using the laptop I can actually open up different tabs and give me more versatility on web browsing and researching.

The closest town to where I was is Durham, North Carolina. Durham is really a small town but since you have University of North Carolina located there it’s developed town, with a shopping mall and plenty of shops and restaurants. It’s about another 60 miles from I am already. I told myself “If I leave now (1pm) I can make it there before they close and hopefully someone can look at my scooter. At this time I wanted to know more on the problem so at least I can tell the problem to the shop better. I called up Sandy and he then tells me what could be the issue. He tells me form the sound of my problem it could be that my CTV is not engaging that’s why you feel like your stuck. Hearing this I asked more questions and he then explains to me how it works. He even explained to me in detail what I need to do if I have to trouble shoot my self. I suspected it was the carb and I take since after the accident the scooter was on the ground and they leaned it on the left. I even took out the intake and found oil near the carb intake valve. I told Sandy “Yeah I do want to save money by looking at the problem myself but I haven’t seen a motorcycle engine or even how it’s belts and clutches work.” He told me “If I were you check it first once you open the panel you can raise the rear wheel and see if it does engage. This will just save you much more.” I told him I’ll try and see what I can work with.

I hit the road again and without any service. I was stuck to listening to my engine and the GPS voice. As you go south the climate changes much more. From a cooler breeze from the Virginia mountains to much more warmer and humid place at the Carolinas. Don’t get me wrong it was also hot in Virginia but since I was near the mountain ranges it was cooler than normal.

I arrived at Durham and then my messages starts streaming in. Finally T-Mobile has service in the area. I looked up some scooter and motorcycle shops. Just a reminder for other motorcyclist out there, most shops will not take your bike because of its make. The reason for this is because most big ones are brand dealer ones and if they work on a different bike and messed it up, they could potentially loose their license from the manufacturer. I then decided to go to a combustioncycles.com that sells scooters and motorcycles. Something like these shops are much more flexible with the brands since they are not brand dealer company. I got there about 4pm just in time to at least check few things on the scooter.

I went in the shop and lights were out. But there was someone at the desk and greeted him. I told him my delema but before they even wanted to look they asked me what’s the brand and where is it made. I then told them its icebear and it’s a Chinese made scooter. Another guy steps in and then tells me “Sorry with a Chinese made scooter I made a policy of not taking them.” I told myself “This guy must be the owner.” I introduced myself and so did he, his name is Dave. He then tells me “I know a guy that goes to you and fixes your scooter on the spot.” Then I told him “I am only passing by and I am just going to be camping. Is there something you can do or even make an exception?”

He then looked at me and asked a mechanic to look at it. I explained to them what the problem was the mechanic that was looking into it was Carlos. He goes to the back and he went for a test run with the scooter. He then comes back and he asked me. “I don’t know why your rear wheel is making a noise but it could be also it’s loose do you want me to check that also?” I was like “Hell yeah you should check it. I don’t want the wheel coming off while am riding.”

Their shop is bigger than normal scooter and motorcycle shops. The weird part that had on that day though that they did not have power. Their area from some reason was no power. Even the signals lights going to their street did not work.

Carlos then comes back and tells me “I don’t see anything wrong with your CTV.” I explained to him how it used to be and how is it now. Then runs a test drive again and it has already started to rain. He comes back all wet and he asks me “Are you sure your top speed is not 40 with all the weight you have on this?” I told him it’s a 150cc engine and yes it fells like a 50cc engine now. At this time they started closing up now and then of the mechanic tells me. “If the the CTV is not the problem it’s something else from what I hear from you I think it’s your fuel system or maybe it is your intake as you mentioned.” Some nice Carlos was off the next day Dave then asks the other mechanic that told me the other problems if he was busy tomorrow. He then replies “Am always working on something” and gives him a smirk. Then they told me to come I early so the y can work on it and see what might be causing it. Then mechanic introduced himself as Justin. I thank them again for taking my scooter.

At this time the rain was coming down hard. I took out my rain gear and went to my camp site. I headed to Eno state park. It was close Durham about 7 miles from the shop. It was already pass 5 pm and it was raining hard. So hard even with goggles on I could barely see 10 feet in front of me. I went to a gas station to wait for it to calm down. After about 10 min I decided to go at it again because I was losing precious day light. Just 5 min on the road the rain just poured much more. The scooter started to stall and it felt like it was being choked. At this point now my top speed was about 30mph. The more I gas it the more it sounded like it was about stall.

I reached camp and I still have some daylight. But it was still raining non stop. And at the park I was so lost with their map I was staring at it for 30 min figuring where I was and the campsites where. So just for anyone intending to go camping at Eno state park their campsite is a mile away from the parking. That’s the main reason why I went around in circles trying to find the campsites. All their camp sites are on the trials hence you have to hike to get there. I told my self “There is no way I can hike a mile with this rain and this gear.” I went to the trail and the first picnic are I saw I told myself “Screw it am camping here and if the park ranger ask me I can just tell him, I came in late and the rain was too much I had to do the camp here.”

It was a horrible camp. I had to do basically just set the tent and sleeping bag, I didn’t even had the time to clear the ground and just payed my tent. The area was surrounded by fruit sends from the trees and this made the ground rocky from inside the tent. It was racing in hard I didn’t even bother getting the rest of my things. I just covered the scooter and jumped in the tent. It was still pouring and I decided to call it a night.

The next day I saw a note on my scooter saying it was illegally parked and should come to the office otherwise there will be a fee for it. I quickly set am stuff out to dry under the sun. The ranger doesn’t really open until 8:30am so I made sure that my gear wasn’t damp wet before packing it. I headed to the office and explained I stayed for the night but with bad weather I just parked anywhere closest to the trail and camped.

I set out to the shop and they told me to be there by 10 am but hey you never if they will bet here early. I gtjust there by 9am and they just opened. Justin saw me and started working in my scooter. I would say his knowledge with mechanics and engines down to the science of it is really top notch. As he opened up my intake and check the filter, it was just drenched with oil and water. He cleaned it off and started working on the carburetor and cleaning it. After an hour or so he was already done. But I wasn’t quite sure about that TV I had to see t for myself so I asked him if he minds to double check and see if was working. He opened it up and started explaining to me how things should run. And from what he showed me its clearly not the CTV. He started putting everything back and even placed in a new fuel filter and new foam intake filter to check if that would be the difference. He test runner it and cakes back and told me he passed 40 and with his weight it should be much more the engine. I thank everyone that had helped me and making an exception with my scooter. And they gave me a sticker and even took a photo
