I woke up and even thought to myself if I could spend one more day there I would. The springs were just inviting and relaxing it gives you a euphoric feel from the heat and all the traveling. But i know I can’t, I have to move on and be on my goal. I called up my friend Noe from Houston and let him know am coming in about a week or so. We talked about my route and some of my struggles and that I will probably make Houston my last stop for my trip.
For me to make it to Houston now it’s all about going westward by the panhandle. The panhandle is basically a part of a state where the land goes a horizontal shape taking a shape of handle. This is very prominent from the Florida state and so that Mexican gulf coast is very know as the panhandle and it crosses till Houston. It runs through Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and ends at Houston Texas.

I already looked up the state parks and plaited where my next stops will be. From my calculation I could get to Houston in 5 days of all goes well. I finished breaking up camp and bid farewell to the family next to me on the camp site.
From the other day I already knew I would have problems now with gas stains since I was already out f the main roads. I would still take a lot of major highways but it does become stretched out. It was back to the Mexican gulf and this time my goal was to reach Sait Joseph Bay State park. And at the same time I was over due with my scooter maintenance. The last time I changed oil and spark plugs was back in key west. I have already run the scooter 1000 miles and I am overdue. So now I have to pass by at a shop and get the motor oil and the spark plugs. Not only that, I did a run through of the scooter before leaving to see what also needed some attention. My plate holder was already loose on side. The mount that holds it broke already and only one part is only holding it now. I ought of putting a zip tie to secure it but I knew it would still hold it until Houston since it’s another 1000 miles distance now. My next problem from the plates is the tip of my muffler is becoming loose. My solution for this now is to clamp it and hold it. Anything to avoid going to a mechanic and have it serviced.

The route I’ll have to take is try to head to highway 98. Which I could take all the way to reach Houston. Onc you hit 98 the landscape changes again and becomes the sea once more. The first thing you will notice is that the water is already different from the Atlantic. It’s more greenish and some parts turns into brown in comparison to the Atlantic that it’s all blue. The breeze comes back with the smell of he sea and is gives you a great feel while riding. It’s almost like a Hollywood movie everytime that you see when someone is riding near the coast. It’s the same effect and feel. I was passing by a mixture of beach houses and then turns into forest area. I tried to stop by at some small towns and ask around if there were bike shops that would be open. I needed supplies and if they can just have the muffler serviced already.
I tried about two shops but it was Sunday so there was just no way anything was open. I finally gave up and just wanted to reach my next destination. I gassed up seeing and headed to a nature preserve area. This area is completely empty. I was driving that road by myself for the next 2 hours. It looked like a forest with swamp areas and a combination of the Mexican Gulf. The muffler was getting louder and I know it’s getting to a point that the muffler tip will just come off.

I’ve reached Apalachicola and needed another gas stop. I loaded up my gas and did another inspection. The muffler tip was getting loose and I know it’s because now from the vibration. I still have the clamp with me and though about doin it the same time when I get my motor oil. I went through the back and to my eyes just couldn’t believe what I was seeing. My plate was gone. The plastic mount holding it completely broke off. I just kept hitting my own helmet and telling myself “You saw the problem. You should have done something about it earlier. This will be a problem now.” I finished gassing up my scooter and contemplated how to deal with the problem. I will be pulled over at some point I have to do something to make it easier if does happen. I told myself “Screw it just go for it until you reach camp and decide when you reach it.”

It was another 2 hours to get to the site. It started to drizzle and then stop. I was getting paranoid about being pulled over constantly and this went on until I reach camp. I reached the site and stopped by and inquired about the camping. They did have a few openings left so I took one that was close to everything. The whole plate issue bothered me so much I didn’t even had time to buy my motor oil. I reached the state park with paranoia at the it’s peak. It was luck that no one pulled me over. Or maybe it’s Sunday also at the same time. The park ranger then asked me my information and then I asked her where was the closes DMV. She responds “Yeah. Saw you pulling in with no plates and was going to ask you about it.” I told her the story on how I lost it and even told her the plate so she can register me already. I have memorized my plate since Florida site parks asks for you plate number to be registered while u stay at the campsites. The ranger then tell me “I don’t think there is a DMV here. The closes one I can think of is at Port of St. Joseph or Panama City.” I asked the ranger about the tide that night. I asked her this because this state park is famous enough for its inlet when the low tide hits. The water level becomes low that the inlet shows off scallops you can pick and cook fresh. I waned to do this and experience cooking the fresh scallops. The ranger then answers me “I don’t think your going to be seeing the scallops today. The tide is high and will drop by tomorrow.” I was bummed out and told the ranger “Wow! First my plates flies out then the scallops hide from the tides.” The ranger just shakes her head with a smile and then tells me “am sure you’ll enjoy your stay here. The water is nice and the camp site is in front of the water.” I thanked the ranger and went on to my site. IMG_20150720_082606 IMG_20150720_082743

I started setting my camp site and called my good friend mike to help get my plates from the DMV in NYC. Apparently if you loose your plates outside the state there is no way for the current state your in to give you a plate. You have to ask your original DMV where your vihicle is registered to give you a new plate. For them to do this you will have to submit a police report where it was lost and a copy of your vihicle registration and insurance. If for some reason you can not obtain a police report you can also make an affidavit about the lost plate. Mile suggested for me to obtain those and send it to me and then he can have the plates send to the park where I was. I disagreed with this because I didn’t wanted to stay much longer and it may take another 4-5 days for me to get the plates. I just told him that I’ll get a report by tomorrow and ask the officer for advise how to approach the situation.

I started preparing my dinner and looked at where the closest sheriff office was. The ranger was correct. The closest one is in the Port of St. Joseph. I decided that I am just willing to risk being stopped by the cops much more and push on the journey. I went to bed early with the anxiety looming over my head. “Should I stay and wait for my plates or just risk it.” This went on even knowing I would have no choice but to still go on.
