Waiting on parts

Waiting on parts

IMG_0199 IMG_0200its been 8 days since my accident and till now I am still waiting on my right parts. Since it was another 30 miles from Luray and my camp site I decided to pitch in my tent in town. Earl helped me by calling the chamber of commerce and the police department to see if that was ok. He told me o can pitch in my tent at the back of his store which has a patch of grass for it. Drove back to the camp site to pick up my things and drove back to town.

It took us a good amount of time on the skyline drive since there was a thick fog that rolled in from the morning. The fog was so thick that even at 10 feet visibility was almost nothing. I saw riders still on the road and I imagined if it was me it would have been really hard. All their hazard lights were on for other cars to see them better. And this hit me… I don’t even have that but maybe put some blinker lights on the back of my pack so I can get seen on those heavy weather.

When we got back I set up my tent mind you this small patch of grass is great but where it is might be a hazard. I am basically 20 feet away from the railroad tracks. If you can imagine maybe trains don’t run here as often but they do. The tracks are for supply trains so they would average about 5-6 times a day passing through town. I still have no service so I have to utilize the township wifi. There are multiple wifi you can pick up but all are locked and secured. The only was for you to get internet at town is go walk to the chamber of commerce. This is about a 5 min walk from the scooter store and not only that there is park there where you can also get drinking water. The library is also across the park where you can actually use their computers to go online.

The scooter store does not have Internet, so most of my days are wandering around town trying to find a spot close enough to the scooter store where I can hangout and use free wifi. Earl has pointed to me a restaurant bar close by. I wanted to check it out and see if I can get wifi. I went in the at the bar and asked for a yeungling. The bartender gave me my drink and then I asked her “Do you guys have wifi here?” She said yes and gave me a paper which has the code for their wifi. I took a photo of it so I can just pass it to my other devices. This is way closer to me than the chamber of commerce wifi. Not only that the towns free wifi has a trick to get it. The only way for you to get the free wifi from the chamber of commerce is by standing near the counter and connect. Even if you already inside their building or even 2 rooms way from the front desk your connection will be gone. And it’s not like your connected its boosting internet speed. The connection still comes and goes even if your already near the front desk. But hey it’s free so I maximized it as much as I can.

On my third day waiting on parts at Luray, Earl approached me and told me “The chief of the firehouse across us did not like that your pitching your tent in that area.” He then told me that there is a patch of grass around the corner that you can stay. He has already asked the police department and even the art house which the area belongs. I packed up my stuff and moved into this new patch of grass. This is behind a warehouse that keeps a gallery of local artists. Around it is a parking area for the downtown shops around including the uncle bucks where I went to eat and drink to get free wifi. So this was actually a win situation I was put in since it’s closer now to where I would normally go to get wifi and drinking water.

On the way to get water I saw a guy pitching a tent close me and asked him if he was coming from the trail. He has been in the trial for a month now and he was gonna stay in town to rest. I introduced myself and he told me his trail name “red corn”. I went into my tent and rested for a bit and heard a group of people also on the same spot. My tent was facing away from the open space so I didn’t pay attention to it. I thought to myself, “Must be some kids hanging out in the parking area. After 20 min or so they were still there and I decided to check it out. They were actually hickers also like red corn going through the Appalachian trail.

It was a big group about 5 of them. They all met in the trail and did stuck around each other for a while now with the exception of red corn which was by himself. They all introduced themselves to me with their trail names. “Hollywood” blue eyed blond and an actress on the trial.”Jokes” the joker of the crew which has all the punchlines on each trail. “Chaz” their chatterbox, always talking loud and cracks jokes around, once in a while he would toss up a broken heart story on the trail. “Cal” their bookworm smart guy on the crew knows how to keep conversation. “Lost boy” the most quite guy in their crew.

Their group was very warm and I even got some free beers while they tell me their trail stories. Most of the time I was asking the, on their food, water supply, camp gear, and hygiene. I am still very new to this and told them my pack is made for cold not for summer. Their age weight on their packs was about 20-30lbs. They manage to tell their families to send them their supplies along the way so they won’t have to carry it along with them every time.

As the night the night progress and more bees keep getting emptied they then decided to check out a local bar on their guide. I was really curious on how this guide works and asked red corn. He showed me a small book that costs $15 and it tells you as you go along the way to the Appalachian trail which town is close. Where to get a free shower, where to camp, where are outfitter stores to have your supplies sent. This proved to be their lifeline along the trail. In my trip I basically told them most of my routes are on the backroads and its all pointing to campgrounds to rest. They were really interested in what I was doing and how it could be the same challenge as they are doing.

As the beers dry out we then decided to hit the local bar restaurant on their guide and started walking. I couldn’t believe how lightweight these guys were. And I thought to myself “maybe when you lacking the proper nutrients and all the physical things you have to do everyday gets the alcohol easier to be absorbed. As soon as we get to this local pub they told us they were going to be closed at 11pm and it was already 10:30pm this pub was set in a small hill and on a exclusive hotel. We literally looked like hobos coming in to this hotel. We then decided to just hit Uncle Bucks for cheap drinks.

When we got in the restaurant was already closed but their bar is still opened. From a family dining it looked like it’s actually a bar with a dance floor and blasting music. We all got our drinks and I decided to but everyone a round of Jameson. I felt like I learned a lot from these guys and would like to thank them for it. A few more drinks later the cal and chad was at the bar just talking and this bald old dude with a flower shirt swos in and engages both of them in a conversation. After a while I told the other group “That that guy looks like he is trying to hook with either cal or Chaz. They then started laughing about it and I think Chaz got that and slipped away back to our table. Cal though was still at it and I told Chaz “Listen that guy is trying to pick one of you guys” Chaz responded “Oh I knew that’s why I bailed”. Then I asked Chaz “Does Cal know?” He then swoops on in to Cal and whispers something in his ear. We knew he was gonna bail out soon after that but to all our surprised he stayed there. Chaz told us “Hey I warned him and what he told me was.” “I know man!” (Imitating his geek accent). Then as group we called it a night. Leaving Cal with the guy.

The next morning we just started cracking up on how the whole conversation came about and continued. At this time they were already packing their stuff to prepare their hike. Cal was telling us that the old guy was so perverted that he was trying to get him home or snuggle with him on his tent. We all just laughed about it and kept asking him why he still continued talking to him. He said he wanted to see how far he can mess up with this guy. They all decided to grab breakfast with the exception of red corn. He woke up early then disserared to town somewhere. After their breakfast I met them and wished them good luck on their journey. They did the same with me and I went back to my tent

Red corn showed up after a couple of hours and told me he tried to find a bathhouse or anywhere he could at least wash some clothes. I told them the big crew left but am sure you’ll run into the, again. He then packed up his things and said farewell.

I’ve picked up a lot things from this group on how to stay light and spend less while on the trial. I hope to run into them in the future
